Rachel Di Mauro successfully graduating with a CIM Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing in 2014 and went on to be awarded the prestigious ‘Top Student’ award from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Rachel now shares with us her experiences of studying with Oxford College of Marketing and the opportunities gaining a qualification has presented.
After completing a Management and Business degree at The University of Reading, I started my first marketing role as Marketing Manager for a small UK healthcare company. I knew I wanted to continue my studies after university and aspired to become a chartered marketer, therefore I decided to complete the Diploma in Professional Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).
It was a challenge having a full-time job and studying at the same time, but I learned so much from the experience. It was more than just a course, as I learned valuable insights from the experience of the tutor and my peers. This led to me being much more curious and innovative with my marketing approach, and also inspired my passion for making marketing measurable.
A few years later, I joined a US-based multi-national healthcare organisation in an international marketing role. The organisation was then acquired by well-known global corporation 3M – a company known for investing in marketing talent – and it wasn’t long before I was completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing. By this time, I was already a certified Chartered Marketer and very dedicated to my continued professional development, so it was a natural progression.
Studying with OXCOM and Achieving ‘Top Student’ Award from CIM
This time I opted for blended learning with the Oxford College of Marketing (OXCOM) which involved both intensive weekend classroom sessions and online learning as well as support from a tutor. The online resources provided by both OXCOM and CIM were comprehensive and really helped me deepen my understanding.
By this time in my career, I was now managing a large multi-million-dollar portfolio, therefore the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing really helped me develop my strategic marketing skills to build long term success for the business.
I achieved the highest mark globally in the Analysis and Decision module – the only ‘A’ grade achieved in that exam board. For this, I received the prestigious “Top Student” Award from the CIM. This was really the pinnacle moment in my CIM journey as everything I had learned in my studies and career really came together and I knew that the hard work had paid off. And as someone who prefers vocational course work to time-pressured exams, this was an extra special achievement.
Since successfully completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing I have continued to maintain my Chartered Marketer status. I make sure that I utilise all of the excellent resources available via my CIM membership and attend the webinars. I read and follow authors on LinkedIn and also mentor several junior marketers – I learn as much from them as they do from me!
At 3M, my responsibility has increased, and I am currently a Segment Marketing Manager within the largest division in the company, covering Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). I have won many marketing excellence awards at national, area and global level. I attribute a lot of this success to my dedication to being a top-level Chartered Marketer, the support and resources from CIM and OXCOM, as well as inspirational mentors and leaders at 3M.
So what’s next? Well, I am planning to start the teaching CIM students to hopefully pass on my experience to the next generation of marketing leaders. Who knows maybe I will even be back as a student myself one day, after all, there is always something new to learn!
