When Laura first considered studying further, she imagined herself pursuing an MA in Marketing. But after researching her options, she realised she wanted something more practical, a qualification she could directly apply to her role while working full-time. That’s when she discovered the CIM Diploma with Oxford College of Marketing, a choice she now calls one of the best career decisions she’s ever made.

Why did you choose to study a CIM qualification?

I had originally planned to study an MA in marketing and began researching distance learning options that would fit around full-time work. However, I wanted a course that I could directly apply to my role, not something too academic that I wouldn’t be able to fully utilise. I already have a degree in Media and Communications and combined with hands-on experience of my roles so far, gave me a strong foundation, but as my career increasingly focused on marketing, and as I discovered how much I enjoyed it, I knew I wanted to deepen my knowledge.

How has studying with us fit into your schedule and lifestyle?

It was a challenge at first, but the flexibility of distance learning made it so much easier to fit my studies around work and life. I made use of the podcast summaries of each session during my commute and set aside dedicated time each week for reading and online learning. The tasks after each session kept me on track, so when it came to assignments, much of the groundwork was already done. I really valued having three years to complete the qualification and that every session had a direct link to the assignment.

While you can finish sooner, that flexibility was crucial for me, especially as I navigated three role changes – including a promotion to Head of Marketing and Communications in a completely new industry. It meant I could pause when needed and pick things up again when I was ready, whilst being able to fully absorb what I was learning without feeling the need to rush.

What’s one key thing you’ve learned or enjoyed most so far?

What I’ve enjoyed most is how directly the learning applies to my role. The course has helped me think more strategically, connect the bigger picture, and bring fresh perspectives to the table. I’ve realised that continuous learning isn’t something to fear, it’s something you can enjoy and make work for you! It’s challenging at first, but seeing the impact of applying new ideas and perspectives straight away is incredibly rewarding. You don’t need to wait until you’ve finished the qualification to see the benefits – the results can be immediate.

How do you think this course will help you in your career?

It’s already had a huge impact! From the very beginning, the course gave me not just the knowledge but also the confidence to keep pushing myself and progressing. It equipped me with practical skills I could apply straight away, which brought a suite of demonstrable results to show the value I was bringing. Within two years of starting, I moved from Marketing Officer to Senior Officer, then Marketing Campaigns Manager, before taking the leap into a new industry as Head of Marketing and Communications. I don’t believe that progression would have happened so quickly without this qualification. It’s genuinely one of the best career decisions I’ve ever made.

Would you recommend a CIM Qualification and why?

Absolutely. The course content is highly relevant, and the flexibility to shape assignments around your real-world challenges makes it practical. Unlike some qualifications where learning can feel disconnected from day-to-day work, this one has a direct impact on your work and career. The distance learning option worked brilliantly for me, and Oxford College of Marketing has been supportive every step of the way. The tutor feedback was excellent, and I always felt I had someone to turn to for guidance.
