If you’re studying towards the CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional & Digital Marketing, you’ll need to choose three CIM Diploma electives alongside the mandatory Strategy and Planning module. With nine electives available, there’s no single “best” choice. The right combination depends on your current role, the direction you want your career to take, and the skills your employer values most. This guide explains all nine CIM Diploma electives and suggests combinations for common marketing career paths, helping you build a qualification that supports your career goals.
How the CIM Level 6 Diploma Is Structured
To gain the CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional & Digital Marketing, you need to complete four modules in total:
- Strategy and Planning (mandatory) — develops your strategic thinking and the skills to build a comprehensive marketing plan that supports organisational goals.
- Three elective modules, chosen from nine options covering strategy, brand, data, content and digital channels (listed in full below).
If you want to go further, you can complete a fifth module to gain the CIM Extended Diploma in Professional & Digital Marketing, a good option if you want deeper specialism across two areas rather than one.
Assessment-wise, Strategy and Planning is assessed by a marketing plan submitted in advance, plus a 2-hour online exam combining essay-style and multiple-choice questions. Every other module, including all nine electives — is assessed by a 90-minute, multiple-choice, onscreen exam. The pass mark for all CIM exams is 60%.
Depending on your existing experience and which electives you choose, you may need to follow a specific route to combine modules — our team can confirm which combinations are available to you and whether any exemptions apply if you’ve completed a relevant degree.
How to Decide Which Electives Are Right for You
Before you look at the individual modules, it’s worth answering a few honest questions:
- What does your current role actually involve day-to-day — and is that the direction you want to keep going in, or the gap you want to close?
- Are you more energised by numbers and forecasting, or by brand, content and creative strategy?
- Which skills does your employer or industry value most right now — for example, AI adoption, ecommerce growth, or organic and paid search performance?
- Do you want three modules that build one deep specialism, or three that give you broader, well-rounded management capability?
With those answers in mind, here’s what each elective actually covers.
The CIM Diploma Elective Modules, Explained
Should I choose Societal Impact as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose Societal Impact if sustainability, ESG and responsible marketing are central to your role or your organisation’s priorities. The module covers how to understand the societal and environmental landscape, and how to align marketing strategy with long-term sustainability goals while engaging stakeholders to act on them. It suits marketers in purpose-led organisations, regulated sectors, or anyone moving into a strategic CSR or sustainability-adjacent role.
Should I choose Commercial Intelligence as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose Commercial Intelligence if you want to strengthen your data and ROI credentials. The module teaches you to interpret and apply commercial data for strategic decision-making, enhance marketing strategies with analysis, and demonstrate return on investment. It’s a strong fit for marketers who work closely with finance, senior stakeholders, or anyone whose next career step depends on being able to prove marketing’s commercial value.
Should I choose Content Strategy as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose Content Strategy if content sits at the centre of how your organisation builds trust and drives conversions. The module takes a strategic view of content marketing — covering how to create an effective content strategy and manage its implementation across channels. It’s well suited to marketers in content, inbound, comms or editorial-adjacent roles.
Should I choose Brand Proposition as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose Brand Proposition if you want to lead brand strategy rather than just execute it. The module covers how to create a distinctive brand proposition in increasingly competitive markets and how to manage a brand successfully over time. It’s the natural choice for marketers aiming at brand manager, brand strategist or wider brand leadership roles.
Should I choose Customer Journey Optimisation as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose Customer Journey Optimisation if your focus is conversion and customer experience rather than a single channel. The module gives you the skills to analyse touchpoints across the customer journey and deliver measurable improvements in both conversion and satisfaction. It suits marketers working in CRM, customer experience, or cross-channel optimisation roles.
Should I choose AI in Marketing as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose AI in Marketing if you want to future-proof your skill set. The module explores core AI concepts, including the role of data and machine learning, and how to evaluate and integrate different AI tools within a marketing strategy. It’s a strong choice for almost any marketer right now, but especially those working across martech, automation or innovation-focused teams.
Should I choose Ecommerce as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose Ecommerce if you work in, or want to move into, online retail or direct-to-consumer marketing. The module covers how to develop a successful ecommerce proposition, ecommerce website best practice, and how to build a supporting inbound marketing strategy. It’s the obvious pick for marketers in retail, D2C brands, or marketplace-driven businesses.
Should I choose Social Media Management as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose Social Media Management if you own or influence your organisation’s social channels. The module covers how to build a social media strategy and manage channels and communities to drive audience engagement. It suits social media managers, community managers and marketers whose KPIs are tied to organic social performance.
Should I choose SEO & Paid Search Management as my CIM Diploma elective?
Choose SEO & Paid Search Management if performance and visibility in search are core to your role. The module covers how to design an effective search strategy — applying SEO and paid search best practice to improve search engine visibility and support wider marketing goals. It’s well suited to performance marketers, digital marketing executives, and anyone responsible for organic or paid search budgets.
FAQs About Choosing CIM Diploma Electives
Do I have to study my modules in a particular order?
No. CIM Diploma modules, including Strategy and Planning, can be studied in any order, so you can sequence them around work deadlines, exam windows, or whichever topic you feel most ready to tackle first.
Is the CIM Extended Diploma worth the extra module?
It depends on your goals. The Extended Diploma adds a fifth module of your choice, giving you deeper coverage across two specialisms instead of one elective area. It’s worth considering if two very different skill sets both matter for your next role — for example, Brand Proposition alongside Commercial Intelligence.
What if I can’t decide between two electives?
Think about which one is harder to learn on the job. Skills like AI in Marketing or Commercial Intelligence are often easier to pick up through structured study than through daily experience alone, whereas skills like Social Media Management or Content Strategy may already be part of your day-to-day role.
