The CIM graduation ceremony is a chance for many of our students to celebrate their achievements with their friends, peers, family and loved ones. This year’s ceremony was extra special for another of our recent marketing graduates, Luke Chamberlain who was jointly awarded the Worldwide Top Student Prize from the Chartered Institute of Marketing alongside Vitorria Traglia.

This award was in recognition of Luke achieving the highest overall marks on the CIM Level 7 Marketing Leadership Programme.  Luke was presented with his award at this year’s CIM graduation ceremony, which took place on Saturday 13th November at the Central Hall in Westminster.

During the ceremony, we spoke to Luke to find out how he felt about receiving the Top Student Award and gaining his recent CIM qualification.

Why did you decide to undertake a CIM qualification?

After completing a marketing degree at Bournemouth university, I spent a couple of years working in various sales and data analysis roles and was unsure of the direction I wanted my career to take.

I quickly realised that a career in marketing was something I wanted to pursue but was aware of how in-demand and sought-after marketers are and that it is a highly competitive industry. I was aware that I needed to do something that would help me to stand out from the crowd. I knew that I had to gain some hands-on experience so that I could put my learning into practice. The CIM Professional Marketing courses presented to me the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on learning and learn how to become successful in my career as a professional marketer.

While working for a construction firm as a digital marketer, I decided to take the Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing to help me progress in my career. One of my assignments on the course was based on customer acquisition and business growth in international markets. Shortly after completing the course, I used the knowledge that I had gained to secure a job in a large multinational company, managing their customer acquisition activities in over 100 countries worldwide.

Once I started to get more involved in strategic projects at leadership level in my role, I decided that it was time to sign up to the CIM Level 7 Marketing Leadership Programme. It turned out to be great timing, as so much of what was covered on the course was directly applicable to my role.

How has your qualification benefited you professionally and personally?

Both courses have helped me to excel in my career and network with others in my industry. For example, whilst studying for the Level 7 Marketing Leadership Programme, I have been able to build a connection with the Head of Strategy and share some of my ideas on new markets and propositions we could invest in. I have also since been involved in a Dragon’s Den style competition which has given me the opportunity to pitch my business and leadership ideas, including how our business can generate additional revenue by entering into the international student market. For this, I was able to use what I had learned from the ‘Leading Change’ and ‘Managing Business Growth’ modules, and my idea has since secured backing and investment from the Senior Leadership Team.

On a personal level, I have really enjoyed participating in the social aspect of studying. Studying over lockdown had its challenges and it was a shame not to have any face-to-face contact with the tutors or with my peers, but it did make it easier to dedicate time at the weekends, in between walks and Zoom quizzes!

How did you find studying with the Oxford College of Marketing?

The Oxford College of Marketing has been fantastic throughout offering additional support where required. The tutors are extremely knowledgeable and always on-hand to help answer any of your questions. The online portal is also easy to use and helps you keep track of what you have covered in lesson time. I have recommended the College to a number of colleagues at work who are also now studying for CIM qualifications with them.

How do you feel about winning the top student award?

I’m absolutely over the moon about being jointly awarded the Worldwide Top Student Prize. I didn’t even know it existed until I got the email so it was a bit of a shock, but one I will remember for a long time!

What have you gone on to do since completing your qualification?

Since completing the Marketing Leadership Programme, I have completed my 2nd year of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours, which means that I will be eligible for the Chartered Marketer status in May 2022.

I had set a personal goal for myself to become a Chartered Marketer by the time I was 35 back in 2014, and over the moon that I am so close to achieving this, with a few years to spare! The Marketing Leadership Programme has given me some great frameworks and ideas for tackling key business challenges and assessing growth opportunities at a strategic level. I am really looking forward to continuing to apply what I have learned as I progress with my career.
