A great book - “throwing sheep in the boardroom” by Matthew Fraser

A great book - “throwing sheep in the boardroom” by Matthew Fraser

A very brief summary by Giorgio Burlini from  www.oxlearn.com

  • There are 2 powers fighting since beginning of history, horizontal and vertical
  • Vertical powers are society and companies, horizontal powers are clubs and other organization where power is shared, no barrier to talk.
  • These 2 powers are colliding again (after a big fight in middle ages), and fight is certain. The results are not.

Identity

  • The importance of “weak ties”. People are finding jobs and making money with people they know just a bit, rather than friends or family.
  • People are building different identities online. This can cause problems as people are creating “fake virtual” identities
  • The privacy is finished, once in the net, someone somewhere knows about you

Status

  • Fame game, people becoming famous using horizontal power
  • No more experts: anybody can become a critic and make or brake a company
  • Brand reputation: big boss blog, big problems

Power

  • Revenge of the amateur: non “officially” recognized people achieve big status
  • What happened to the music industry is happening to other industries. From big labels, to ITunes, to MySpace, to alternative source of revenues
  • Enterprise 2.0:  companies will be slow to adapt and relinquish power. While politicians will move faster, as they directly depend upon people electing them, managers and executives will block any assault to their power status
